Can Plasma Sublimation performed by using Plexr® be an effective method to treat Xanthelasma?

About Xanthelasma
Xanthelasma Palpebrarum is a common localised condition of the periorbital skin due to an accumulation of fat that is usually localised in the eyelids.
The inner canthus of the upper lid, that is to say, the angle formed by the eye’s upper and lower eyelids, is the area most frequently involved.
It takes the form of a yellowish plaque that can vary in shape and size. It mainly affects people over 40 years of age and, although it does not cause any pain or discomfort, nor does it affect the quality of vision, it may cause significant cosmetic and functional disfigurement.
Moreover, it is a progressive and permanent condition that can only be resolved with treatment.

Solutions and treatments: according to the tradition
Methods of treatment are several and may include surgery, cryotherapy, lasers, and radiofrequency. However, each of these methods is associated with limitations and complications, including persistent erythema, recurrence, scarring, and pigmentary alteration.
In short, due to the risky location near the eye and high recurrence rate, effective treatment of Xanthelasma can be difficult.
Given these limitations of currently available modalities in the treatment of Xanthelasma, it is clear that there remains an unmet need.

PLEXR®: the innovative method to remove Xanthelasma
One valuable modality for the treatment of Xanthelasma can be surely embodied by Plasma sublimation performed using Plexr®.
As a matter of fact, along with the numerous scientific pieces of research and studies on Plexr® and Plasma sublimation to treat various medical conditions, its application has also been studied to treat Xanthelasma.

Case study
The scientific study taken under consideration in this article has been published in 2020 by the Department of Dermatovenerology -Faculty of Medicine- of the University of Latvia and carried out by Dr. Ingrida Ritina et al.
In this study, fifteen patients with a total of 27 Xanthelasmas have been treated by performing Plasma sublimation using Plexr® Plus on the higher power setting (red handpiece) and spray technique.
The procedure has been performed as follows:
1- cleaning of the treatment site through an antiseptic cleanser
2- local anesthesia administration (2% lidocaine solution) + 40 minutes of occlusion before the treatment
3- spray technique using the red handpiece of Plexr® Plus: evenly treating the entire surface in a layered approach until complete clinical clearance has been achieved.
4- after the procedure, the treated areas have been cooled and cleansed using an antiseptic cleanser

ABOUT THE POST TREATMENT
Sanitising and taking care of the treated area is one of the few fundamental precautions that should not be neglected. This is why GMV has recently designed and launched the perfect product to support both the doctor and the patient: the TREA box.
TREA box has everything you need to take care of yourself in the crucial post-treatment phase:
–Soft Surgery Clean, a disinfectant wipe, useful and convenient to use for gently cleansing the treated area;
–Factor K, is a moisturising cream with high regenerating properties, which stimulates cell turnover;
–Skin Cover, is a high-coverage foundation with vegetable-based UV protection and rich in essential skin vitamins.

RESULTS
All 27 Xanthelasma lesions resolved completely with just one treatment performed using Plexr® for plasma sublimation.
Patients tolerated the procedure well with no intraoperative complications or pain. No serious adverse events were experienced, and no reports of pain or discomfort during or after the treatment performed with Plexr®. They experienced full restoration of their normal skin texture over a period of 1-month post-procedure, and no scars or pigmentary changes have been reported.
To sum up, patients evaluated the procedure as comfortable, requiring minimal and easy aftercare, and all of them expressed complete satisfaction with the aesthetic and cosmetic results.
According to doctors Plexr® is beneficial due to several reasons too:
First of all its excellent efficacy, its minimal downtime (all the wounds re-epithelialized within 1-2 weeks), and its high safety profile. In addition, the cost of this device is generally affordable and less costly than most laser equipment. Finally, the risk of damage to the eye is minimal, and it is even not required to wear protective eyeglasses for either the provider or patient, making it a safe option for use around the eye.
Not considering the simplicity and safety of manipulation with complete control of volume and depth of tissue destruction.
